Munich

Munich, the capital of Bavaria, is a wonderful Christmas destination; not only is it within driving distance of the Alps, but there are an incredible 74 Christmas markets within its vicinity. These range from the traditional (at Esslingen market you are transported back to the Middle Ages with fire jugglers, jesters and medieval food) to the modern (in Munich’s gay quarter you’ll find pink and purple pagodas in place of the usual timber huts and pink Christmas trees galore). There is even a market on an island in nearby Lake Chiemsee, where local delicacies are served including freshly-caught fish.
Stay: Rocco Forte’s The Charles Hotel is offering a “Winter Dreams” package to include a guide of the stalls and a gift-wrapping service.

Price: Prices are from Ђ220/*185 per person per night, including breakfast and hot chocolate and panettone on arrival and a gluhwein cocktail. Visit www.roccofortecollection.com or call 00800 7666 6667.

Frankfurt

The Frankfurt Christmas market is over 600 years old and is one of the oldest in Germany. Today, it is made up of 200 beautifully-decorated stalls all set out in front of the restored, medieval town hall. The market in nearby Saarbr*cken is also well worth a visit, particularly for families; at 7pm each evening, Father Christmas flies his reindeer sleigh over the market to tell the story of Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer.
