Los Cabos might be in Mexico but you won’t recognize it as such, between its European influences and its historical roots from the Pericú, the Guaycura, and the Cochimí. The region is currently on its path to fighting misconceptions about Los Cabos, there is a lot more to it than people assume, with it being so far from mainland Mexico, and the opposite of the country and touristic places such as Cancun.

Indeed, Los Cabos is situated on the Tropic of Cancer offering the region different ecosystems in a small area: desert, sea and mountains, with dry heat and less than ten days of rain per year.

You’ll have a choice between tanning on the Pacific Ocean and having dinner at the Sea of Cortés. The next day you could head to one of the two 2000 meters high mountain ranges – and maybe finally see some rain.

At Virtuoso Travel Week in Las Vegas this August, Rodrigo Esponda, Managing Director Los Cabos Tourism Board, explained how the term California comes from the region – known today as Baja California. The name "California" originates from the 16th-century Spanish novel Las Sergas de Esplandián, where it described a mythical island rich in gold, ruled by Queen Calafia, and inhabited by Amazonian women. When Spanish explorers reached the Baja California peninsula in the 1530s, they believed they’d found this legendary land, and the name "California" endured, eventually applying to the entire region.

Marine life

Los Cabos is very safe, different and unique: “it’s nothing like what you have seen in other parts of the country.” Indeed, 39% of the world marine mammals are in the Sea of Cortés. You will find rays, whales, and dolphins, among other sea animals. “Just jump in the water and it’ll be there, [and] they move throughout the year, so you’ll see different things”.

Michelin stars

The Michelin guide came out in May 2024, and this was the first time the Michelin guide featured Mexico. A Michelin star was awarded to Cocina de Autor at Grand Velas Los Cabos, a green Michelin star was awarded to Flora’s Field Kitchen and Acre, as well as the Bib Gourmand to Metate, Flora’s Field Kitchen, and Cocina de Campo by Agricole.

Sustainability has become increasingly important to tourists and MICE. The green stars in Los Cabos were awarded to organic farms who host MICE events. Indeed, places and venues are used on a regular basis for incentives.

The region offers all types of foods: traditional, modern, food trucks, homemade, and gastronomic.

MICE Program

Recently, 10% of bookings are related to incentives or meetings but the ADR is higher than the regular ADR of the region as it is more focused on high-end hotels. Many have their meetings on the first day and the rest of their stay is experience focused. Customers have been asking for new sustainable events as well. People want to be connected in some way to the region’s sustainability causes. The other two main trends are gastronomy and wellness. The latter represents an important revolution for meetings. Almost all incentive programs want to include some wellness concept. This can be through food, meditation, yoga, or meetings – there are rooms to disconnect during the meetings where sound healing can be experienced.

Getting there

Since November 3rd, the destination has become more accessible to Europeans. Condor’s new direct flight from Frankfurt airport to Los Cabos is Germany’s first direct flight to the destination. There have already been a fairly good number of reservations from French flyers as Frankfurt is easily reachable from France. The A330neo offers four seats in first class, 32 in business class, and then economy premium and economy cabins. This allows Condor to get all types of tourists during the winter season – November until Easter – with flights every week on Wednesdays and Sundays.

This is an amazing improvement for Los Cabos as it is only reachable by air, the distance between it and mainland Mexico being as long as Italy. This is why the culture between the country and the region is so vastly different, it has a unique feeling. The region has been there forever, it is a brand new Mexican feeling with a dissimilar European influence from the rest of Mexico.
