Aaron Kaupp, Managing Director, on the grounds of Raffles The Palm Dubai Photo credit © Sonia Taourghi / Journal des Palaces The air in the emirate is humid, but the atmosphere in Raffles The Palm Dubai is a breeze on a stretch of Palm Jumeirah. Adorned in gold, and grandiose, with the sense of service characteristic of the Raffles brand, the 5-star hotel has welcomed Aaron Kaupp as its managing director in the Spring. It's the perfect time to sit down and discuss his extensive experience in luxury hospitality, spanning over 25 years.
The German native is known for his dedication to excellence, for which he was awarded the Luxury Travel Advisor Awards' “Best General Manager of a Luxury Hotel” in 2009 when managing Palazzo Sasso (now Palazzo Avino). The leader went on to perfect his craft at the helm of Belmond Villa San Michele in Florence, Armani Hotel in Milano, Le Royal Monceau in Paris, before leading London properties for Jumeirah Group as Regional Vice-President and General Manager for The Carlton Tower. Always up for a challenge, Aaron Kaupp has been tasked, over the years, with opening, re-opening, repositioning and generally leading his teams, hotels, and their brands to new levels of success.
Having joined Raffles The Palm Dubai in the hotel's third year of operation, the new managing director discusses his European experience, his vision for the Arab property and the teams, plus his take on Dubai.Journal des Palaces: What attracted you to a career in luxury hospitality?Aaron Kaupp: I was drawn to luxury hospitality because it represents the perfect blend of art and innovation. The ability to create memorable, personalised experiences for guests is deeply fulfilling. Hospitality is a centuries-old tradition, yet it constantly evolves to meet modern travellers' expectations, making it both challenging and exhilarating. The opportunity to innovate within this space, to surprise and delight guests accustomed to the best, attracted me to this industry. After a career built in Europe, what personally surprised you the most in Dubai? What struck me most about Dubai is its rapid growth and pursuit of excellence. Dubai fosters an environment where innovation is not only encouraged but expected, creating a dynamic setting that is both challenging and rewarding. The city's ability to seamlessly blend modernity with its rich cultural heritage was a delightful surprise. Dubai's diversity and global outlook make it a unique and thrilling place to work in the hospitality industry. It's not your first time leading a Raffles property. What similarities and differences did you observe between the two properties? (culture, strength, clientele…)Both Raffles properties share a deep-rooted commitment to delivering timeless elegance and exceptional service. However, the differences lie in each location's unique cultural and market dynamics. The Dubai clientele is more diverse and cosmopolitan, emphasising modern luxury and innovation. The scale and grandeur of Raffles The Palm Dubai reflect the city's global ambitions, contrasting with the more intimate and historically rich ambience of the European property I previously managed. Both properties, however, embody the Raffles ethos of creating memorable experiences that stand the test of time. What was one unforgettable moment so far after four months at the helm of the Raffles The Palm Dubai? One unforgettable moment was when Raffles The Palm Dubai was named one of the top 100 hotels in the world by Travel + Leisure and, notably, the only property in the UAE to make the list. This recognition was a testament to my incredible team and our commitment to excellence. It was a moment of immense pride and validation for the everyday hard work and dedication everyone on the team brings to their roles. With such an extensive experience, what do you think you bring, and what are you learning? My journey in Dubai has been a profound learning experience. On my part, I bring a deep understanding of luxury hospitality, a commitment to innovation, and a passion for pushing boundaries. I believe in empowering my team, fostering creativity, and challenging the status quo to create unforgettable guest experiences. At the same time, I am constantly learning. The city's rapid pace of change keeps me on my toes, encouraging me to think ahead and stay adaptable in a highly competitive environment. What are the key differences and opportunities when recruiting in Dubai?Recruiting in Dubai offers the unique opportunity to tap into a highly diverse and international talent pool. The city attracts top talent worldwide, bringing many skills, perspectives, and cultural backgrounds. However, this also means that recruitment must be strategic, focusing on finding individuals who possess the necessary expertise, align with our brand values, and thrive in a fast-paced, multicultural environment. The diversity of the workforce here is a strength, as it drives creativity and innovation within the team. What would be your best advice to someone starting a career in luxury hospitality? My best advice to someone starting in luxury hospitality is to stay passionate about service and committed to excellence. In this industry, excellence is not just a goal, but a standard we must constantly strive to achieve. Be curious, ask questions, and seek new ways to create memorable guest experiences. Embrace change as it keeps you sharp and drives innovation. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who inspire you and push you to grow. Most importantly, remain authentic and humble; hospitality is about building meaningful connections, and your values will guide you personally and professionally.
