Following the nomination of Olivier Chavy as its new CEO, Journal des Palaces caught up with Christian Pertl, Chief Commercial Officer of The Lux Collective, to have an idea of what to expect from this change in leadership and where the focus of the company lies.

Indeed, the Mauritius home-grown brand announced Olivier Chavy's nomination as CEO just a few days before the beginning of the Arabian Travel Market that took place in Dubai from 6th to 9th May 2024. The French-born travel and hospitality expert has left a mark in major hospitality groups holding a variety of positions at Hilton, as CEO of Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, and while serving as President of Travel + Leisure – Panorama Group from 2010 to 2024. Olivier Chavy recently declared his "priority will be on collaborating closely with the team members, recognising their vital contribution to TLC’s future success and beyond".

On his part, Christian Pertl confirmed Mauritius, Maldives, and China as key focuses, regions the new CEO is familiar with. "The idea behind my presence in Dubai is to develop the area with a specific reach in Africa and the Middle East. Our key objective is growth, and we're looking at assessing the brands we're operating."

As far as what the new leadership will bring to the company, the CCO is very clear. "We live in a very dynamic world, so even the most successful brands go through a journey and changes. The customers are changing, technology and pace are changing. The key area is for sure digital transformation because there's no way around it. Therefore, bringing new talents is a great opportunity to better diversify and bring new skills."
For various reasons, be it political, geopolitical, or cultural, many hoteliers have expressed difficulty in finding talents. A phenomenon, Christian Pertl is familiar with, pragmatic about, and self-reflecting on. "Generations have changed and finding the right talents is very difficult. There's a lot for the industry to catch on, to create a better environment, to be more suitable for the younger generation. We're opening up to tech talents or luxury talents. We need to remember where we're coming from, of course. I come from hospitality myself. However, opening up to someone with the right attitude instead helps us stay relevant."

Coincidently, I couldn't help but think about one of the scheduled conferences set on luxury hospitality needing to learn from luxury retail. Could it be that simple? "At the same time, reflects Christian Pertl, a consumer of luxury goods himself, you can look at the luxury industry, and realise how lacking they can be. I had one of those lukewarm experiences recently, and thought to myself, Four Seasons' mantra is to treat others the way you want to be treated. Luxury retail isn't always about that: the goods deliver, but not necessarily the service. At The Lux Collective we care about what matter and we make each moment matter. That's the promise of our service".

Olivier Chavy, for his part, will officially start in his new role as CEO in early June.
